Husband of Ada Margaret Metcalf (formerly Hall), of 4, Farrands Yard, Stockwell Gate, Mansfield, Notts. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Pte. James Northage Hall, 1st Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, wrote to his parents in Nottinghamshire from Suvla on 22nd November 1915. "Just a few lines, hoping you are well as it leaves me at present. I received your letter to-day, also paper and book, so shall have plenty of writing paper to last a long time. I had a letter from Harold the other day, and he says what a fine time he is having — he is lucky. Mag. told me they were enlisting fast again. It's time they did; they ought to fetch all the single men now. If they had come out at first it would have been all over, I think. I don't know what weather you are having, but it is awful cold here. I never was in so cold a place as this, but we are all sticking to it, hoping it will soon be over. I should like a good slice of cake at time; it is a pity the other got damaged so bad. George is in the best place for getting anything. I am longing to see you all in the old home again, they we will have a nice party on our own. Our little Meg. has not forgot me yet; God bless her. I should like to have been home on her birthday, but never mind, let us put our trust in God, and ask Him to guide us safely through it and make peace before long. Remember me to all brothers and sisters. From Jim." [1] It was to be his last letter. The cold weather was shortly to become much worse and he died from the effects of frostbite on 9th December 1915. Buried on Portianos Military Cemetery, Lemnos, the former miner was the son of William and Mary Hall, of Pleasley; husband of Ada Margaret Hall, of 11 Nottingham Road, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire.
