James Samuel Bird

In memoriam

James Bird was the son of Joseph Bird (1846-1933) and Emma Jane Bird (nee Woodward) (1846-1918), of Painstown, Waimate. Qualified chemist. His brother Arthur Joseph Bird was killed at the Somme on 15 September 1916. James was one of 29 crew and 182 troops lost when at 9.15 am on 23 October 1915 the marked hospital ship Marquette was hit by a torpedo on the starboard side and began to list. Within about 15 minutes she had sunk in the Aegean Sea. His mother Emma died at Waimate on 29 September 1918.
