1873 – 1915

In memoriam

WHAT I ASPIRED TO BE AND WAS NOT COMFORTS ME

Military Service Age: 42 Force: Army Unit: Canadian Army Medical Corps Division: 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital Jessie trained to be a nurse at Massachusetts General Hospital and went on to become superintendent of a hospital near Philadelphia. Later, she married and had a son. In May of 1915 she enlisted with the Canadian Army Medical Corps and, with another nursing sister from Ontario, was among 70 Canadian nurses stationed on Lemnos to treat thousands of wounded and sick Allied servicemen who had fought at Gallipoli. The medical staff faced poor sanitation, illness, heat, a poor diet and scarce water. Given the large influx of wounded soldiers, records indicate two nurses were required to change the dressing on a patient's wound - one to change the dressing and one to fan flies out of the wound. Four short months after enlisting, Jessie succumbed to disease that must have been rampant there. It is said that she died with her 17-year-old son's photo in her hand. Wife of Herbert A. Jaggard, of Elmira, New York.
