In memoriam

Granddaughter of Thomas Buckland Jeffery , an inventor of the clincher tire/rim and manufacturer of bicycles and early automobiles, founder of the Rambler brand. After her first (brief) marriage to Rufus T. Bush in 1929, she left New York City and traveled to Greece in the early 1930's, and became active in the Delphic World Peace Movement. While working as a photographer at the Agora excavations, she met archaeologist Eugene "EV" Vanderpool, and settled permanently in Greece after their marriage in 1935. During World War II she set up a soup kitchen for children in the Athens suburb of Maroussi, and remained in Greece with their four children when EV was sent to a prisoner of war camp in Germany. In 1956 she and EV renovated an abandoned 17th-century monastery in Pikermi into a home for their family, dividing their time between there and Athens in later years. They had a son and three daughters, one of whom, photographer Lisa Vanderpool, married Miltiadis Evert (1939 – 2011), a Greek politician, Member of Parliament, Government minister, and ex-chairman of the New Democracy party.
