Royal Australian Artillery Rank Sergeant WX51. Posting on Death: 2/3rd Field Regiment, he was killed in action in Crete. Awards: Mentioned in Despatches Description of WA. Paybook photograph of WX51 Sergeant John Alfred Washer (Mentioned in Despatches), 2/3rd Field Regiment, Australian Field Artillery. Sergeant Washer, aged 22, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 21 May 1941. He was the son of Alfred and Dorothy Mary Washer, of Midland Junction, WA. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 10. (Photograph supplied by the Army's Soldier Career Management Agency. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in Nedlands WA, also his name is located at panel 18 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
