VX26146 Royal Australian Artillery Posting on Death: 3 LIGHT ANTI AIRCRAFT REGIMENT RAA He was presumed to have drowned as a result of enemy action at sea. Vic. Paybook photograph of VX26146 Gunner John William Piper, 3rd Light Anti Aircraft Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery. Gunner Piper, aged 41, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 29 May 1941. He was the son of Thomas Henry and Ann Maria Piper, and the husband of Mary Marjorie Piper, of East Geelong, Vic. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 10. (Photograph supplied by the Army's Soldier Career Management Agency. He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in COALVILLE Vic, also his name is located at panel 21 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial.
