He went to school in Plainfield,MA and Halifax,VT before matriculating at Williams College in 1814. He received his B.A. there in 1816, and graduated from Theological Seminary at Andover on Jul 6,1819. Soon after in Brimfield,MA he became interested in missionary work, and that same year he was elected as a Professor at Amherst College. He later studied Arabic, and was chosen to replace the deceased Rev.Levi Parsons as a missionary to Palestine along with Rev.Pliny Fisk. He briefly returned to America in 1824 to visit his aged parents, and in 1828 became a missionary to Greece, and was a United States Consul there. He married Anna/Annetta Aspasia Menjos (1804-1896) on the Isle of Tenos, Greece, on Jul 22,1829. Children: six daughters, including Anna Aspasia King, Elizabeth Washington King Lasell, and Abigail "Abbie" King Locock, and one son. He requested a very simple stone. mentioning only his birth and death dates, in a quiet corner, shaded by cypress and pepper trees, of a cemetery in Athens where his young daughter Anna Aspasia was buried years earlier. The transcription below is from a white marble sarcophagus monument, said to be the gift of an affectionate daughter.
