Jožef Geoheli

Jožef Geoheli was the son of Franc Geoheli and Ana Lenaršič Geoheli. He was born in Notranje Gorice. He was ordained in 1935. He served as a curate for four and a half years in Dolenjske Toplice, where he was instrumental in helping bring electricity to the village, and was transferred to Zaplana to serve as the parish priest in 1940. A 1951 source claims that Geoheli requested thirty rifles from Italian forces as part of an attempt to set up a Home Guard base in Zaplana. A gang of Partisans led by Stane Dobovičnik—a former classmate of Geoheli—broke into the rectory in Zaplana on the evening of 26 July 1942, shot Geoheli, and took him wounded to their camp, where he was interrogated and then sentenced to death. They threw his body over the cliff at Vranje Pečine above Podlipa and hid it under boulders. The location of the body was revealed four months later by a captured Partisan. Geoheli's body was retrieved on 30 November and he was buried in the Zaplana cemetery on 2 December 1942 after a funeral attended by 1,000 people.
