Jusuf “Jusa” Nikšić

1925 – 2020

In memoriam

Jusuf Jusa Nikšić (Mostar, 1925 – 2020) was a Bosnian-Herzegovinian painter and academic artist, renowned for his contributions to visual arts. He graduated from the State School of Applied Arts in Sarajevo in 1951 and continued his studies in painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb. He later pursued further studies in Belgrade, where he graduated in 1957. From 1959 until 1991, Nikšić served as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo and became a member of the Association of Fine Artists of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ULUBIH). Nikšić held his first solo exhibition in 1953 in Mostar and went on to exhibit at numerous group and solo exhibitions both domestically and abroad. He was one of the founding members of the Mostar "November Group," which later became the Herzegovina Branch of ULUBIH. His artistic portfolio included a wide range of subjects, such as landscapes, portraits, and abstract compositions. Throughout his career, Nikšić earned several accolades for his significant contributions to the arts. Although Nikšić faced significant personal losses, including the destruction of his works during the war when his studio was burned and the theft of 60 paintings in December 2012, he remained steadfast in Mostar, even during the most difficult times. His resilience was a testament to his dedication to both his art and his community. Nikšić's work often reflected sharp social observations and a commitment to coexistence and mutual respect. His art was not only an expression of his personal views but also served as a critical commentary on the social movements of his time. In addition to his artistic career, Nikšić contributed to the cultural life of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war, serving as a member of the Art Company of the Fourth Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His dedication to the preservation of cultural heritage left a lasting mark on the visual arts scene, particularly in Mostar. Jusuf Jusa Nikšić passed away on April 1, 2020, in Mostar, leaving behind a rich legacy in the visual and cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. His work continues to inspire future generations of artists and admirers of fine art.
