Karl Schümers

In memoriam

German military officer and Oberst of Police in the Waffen-SS during World War II. He was a recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, awarded by Nazi Germany to recognize extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. On April 5 1944, he commanded the execution of 280 unarmed women and children in the village of Kleisoura for the killing of three Nazi soldiers by ELAS guerrilla forces operating under Alexis Rosios just outside the village. He was later killed in mine eplosions laid by Greek partisans.
