Military Service Service Number: J/26001 Age: 24 Force: Air Force Unit: Royal Canadian Air Force Division: 178 (R.A.F.) Sqdn Flying Officer / Air Bomber. Journalism was his chosen profession. He began writing for the Meaford Express (Meaford, Ontario) as a school boy. He attended Queen's University at Kingston, Ontario for a year and worked as a news correspondent for a Toronto, Ontario newspaper until he enlisted. Kenneth enlisted in the RCAF in 1942. After graduation and receiving his commission, he went overseas in Sep 1943. He had had special training both in Canada and abroad for his duties with the Pathfinder Squadron. Although he knew that his brother was also in London, they had not been able to arrange a meeting. Then one day they met by accident on a subway train. Kenneth was posted to RAF Squadron 178 and in September, as an observer on a Liberator bomber crew, began operations from a base in Italy. The crew bombed targets in Northern Italy, Hungary and Yugoslavia. He died when his aircraft was shot down by a German fighter plane over the village of Gorngi Grad, in Slovinia (Yugoslavia) while dropping supplies to partisan freedom fighters. The crew of eight was buried in the village and in 1948 were moved to permanent burial in the British cemetery at Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Kenneth is also remembered on a family marker at Lakeview Cemeteryu in Meaford, Ontario.
