In memoriam

President of Greece, Author. He served from July 19, 1975 to May 10, 1980. Prior to becoming president, he earned a law degree from the University of Athens. He received a Doctorate degree in 1928 at Heidelberg, He then became a professor of law in 1933. In 1940 he was arrested and exiled for his activities against the current government. During the Axis occupation of Greece during World War II, he was part of the Greek Resistance and had to go to the Middle East where the balance of the Greek government resided. After the end of World War II, he returned to Greece and entered politics. He became minister of interior. He became a member of the Liberal Party in 1946. He served as a member of parliament and in various ministerial positions. After the dictatorship ended in 1974, he was elected again as member of the Hellenic Parliament and became Minister for Culture. In 1974 he presided over the parliamentary commission that submitted the first draft of the new constitution. The next year he was elected president. He is best remembered as an author of works on philosophy, sociology, philology, and law. His extensive writing work includes textbooks about legal theory, surveys on philosophy and history, literary works such as poems, essays and translations of ancient Greek and Roman classics. He retired after serving his five-year term.
