La Tour Mollet “Ted” D'Auvergne

1906 – 1941

In memoriam

7110 Private LA T. M. D'AUVERGNE N.Z. Machine Gun Bn. 2nd June 1941 Age 35

Ted d'Auvergne has become a folk figure somewhat in New Zealand. As his train was preparing to leave it's siding outside the Waihao Forks Pub in rural New Zealand, it is said that a bottle of beer was left by Ted to drink on his return. Unfortunately, He died before he could return to his home in New Zealand. The bottle still remains at the Waihao Forks Pub, unopened and sits as a memory to not only Ted but to other N.Z. soldiers who died in the war. In 2020, Ted was commemorated in a bronze statue outside the Pub showing him in uniform waiting for the train and clutching the bottle of beer in his right hand.
