King of Sparta. King Leonidas I of Sparta was the 17th King of the "Agiad Dynasty" of the Spartan Royal House. Leonidas ascended to the throne, succeeding his half-brother Cleomenes I. King Leonidas I lead a small force of 300 Spartan warriors and their allies against the massive Persian army led by King Xerxes. Despite being vastly outnumbered, King Leonidas I and his men held the narrow pass at Thermopylae for three days. Ultimately, King Leonidas I and his soldiers were overwhelmed, but their sacrifice inspired the Greek city-states to unite against the Persian invasion.
