Age 26 Military Medal Service No: 2037960 Royal Artillery, 304 Bty., 27 Searchlight Regiment Only child of Ernest William and Alice Cory. Husband of Joan Kathleen Cory, of Childwall, Liverpool. He was posthumously awarded the Military Medal announced in the London Gazette 4 November 1941. The recommendation from his commanding officer states: On the 22nd May 1941 at ST MATTHEWS HILL, near CANEA, CRETE, No.2037960 Gnr. CORY, LESLIE ERNEST PERCY of 304 Battery 27th S.L. Regt. R.A. answered the call for volunteers and he with No.2025731 B.S.M. Egglesfield, W.A. brought in a wounded Trooper of the Northumberland Hussars lying in a ravine some 800 yards away. The rescue was carried out over open ground under fire from snipers. I consider this man's act, and devotion to duty, is very worthy of recognition. Major D.E. Wright O.C. 304th S.L. BTY. R.A. There are varying dates for his death - he is reported as killed 27 May 1941 on the Royal Artillery other ranks casualty cards but officially shown as died 2 June 1941 by the CWGC'
