Sergeant Wireless Operator/Air Gunner Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve Royal Air Force 40 Squadron Regimental Number 1298815 Leslie John Carey was the son of Albert Edwin Cary and Mary Ellen Whitehead. His brother Arthur died at sea while serving in the Royal Navy. In May, 1944 Royal Air Force 40 Squadron was stationed at Foggia Main Base in Italy. At 21.18 hours on 7 May 1944 a Vickers Wellington aircraft carrying Leslie Frederick Dutton, Royal Canadian Air Force, and 4 crew members from the R.A.F. set out as part of an air operation to bomb the Ploiesti oilfields in Romania. There was no further contact after departure. The Allied Control Commission in Romania confirmed that the aircraft had been shot down, and 4 crew members were buried at Vartoapele de Sus Teleorman, Romania. The sole survivor, Flight Lieutenant H. D. Calvert, R.A.F., was taken prisoner by the Germans and held in Camp 13, Romania.
