Statesman, Prime Minister of Romania. He served from 29 March 1974 to 29 March 1979. Prior to becoming prime minister he worked together with Nicolae Ceaușescu, his future brother-in-law, in the Union of Communist Youth in 1944. In 1951 he was appointed as Director of the Department of Economics at the University of Bucharest and Director General of the Central Directorate of Statistics. He served as Vice President of the State Council from 1969–1972. From 13 October 1972 to 27 February 1974 he served as Chairman of the State Planning Committee and then prime minister. He is best remembered for his close relationship with infamous Communist leader and dictator, Nicolae Ceaușescu, President of Romania and his wife. After the Romanian Revolution of 1989, he was sentenced to life in prison but was reduced to ten years on appeal. He served two and was released due to poor health.
