Maria Zlovačera Toretich was born on 15 April 1840 in Lopud, present day Croatia, according to her baptismal record. At the time, the island was also known by the Italian exonym of "Isola di Mezzo" or "Mezzo." Her parents were Nicolo (Nicole) Zlovačera and Elena (Jela) Boghetta. Maria married Domenico Toretich (of Koločep) on 26 September 1864 in Lopud, according to parish records. Interestingly, this was the same day her brother Michele Zlovačera married Domenico's sister Cattarina Toretich in Koločep. Maria and Domenico lived in the Gornje Celo area of Koločep and had six children together: Maria (1865), Pietro (1868), Nicolo (1869-1942), Michele (1871-1939), Emilio (1875), and Elena (1877). Maria died on 15 July 1914 in Koločep, according to her death record, and was buried in the cemetery at Sv. Nikole. [Note: Please see the memorial of Maria's husband, Domenico, for notes on the lives their children. Additionally, there are mistakes on three of the baptismal records for Maria's children. Maria's first name is written as "Cattarina" in the baptismal records for Nicolo, Emilio, and Elena. Her first name is correct in Maria's and Pietro's baptisms, and was clearly corrected by the priest from "Cattarina" to" "Maria" in Michele's baptismal record. The most likely reason for the mistake appears to be that Maria's brother married Domenico's sister, "Cattarina," and both couples married on the exact same day but in different locations.] *The drop down menu on FindAGrave does not allow me to add Maria's home village name of Lopud.
