In memoriam

The people of Križevska Vas and Zagorica traditionally took their cherries down to the valley in June to earn some money. However, in 1944 the Partisans forbade the villagers from doing so and ordered them to pick the cherries and turn them over to the Partisans instead. Two young Partisans from the unit at Velika Vas came to the Vehovc farm on a late June afternoon while fifteen-year-old Marija and her ten-year-old brother Ivan were alone at home. After Marija had handed over the cherries, one of the Partisans also demanded her bag, threatening to shoot her if she did not give it to him. He then shot and killed her.
