Monsignor Marijan Oblak was born in Veli Rat, Dugi otok, Croatia, on December 8, 1919, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 5, 1945, in Ðibenik. From 1945 until 1949, Oblak served as prefect of the Diocesan Children's Seminary in Ðibenik, as well as a teacher at a State Gymnasium. Between 1949 and 1951, he was the prefect of the Archdiocese's Seminary Zmajević in Zadar and from 1955 till 1958, he served as vice-rector of the Seminary. Aged 50, he was named Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Zadar on April 30, 1958, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Flavias on the following July 6, inside the Cathedral of St. Anastasia, from Archbishop Mate Garkovic, assisted by Bishops Ciril Banic and Stjepan Bauerlein. Oblak was named Archbishop of the See of Zadar on August 29, 1969, following the resignation of Msgr. Pietro Doimo Munzani, and held the named office until his retirement at the age of 76, on February 2, 1996. Archbishop Oblak died on Friday, February 15, 2008, in Zadar, at the age of 88. His Requiem Mass, presided by Cardinal Josip Bozanić was held at the Cathedral of Saint Anastasia of Zadar, where interment also took place.
