In memoriam

Marsela Šunjić  (1963–2009) was a Bosnian writer and model, known for her literary work centered on the city of Mostar. She was born in Ljubljana, Slovenia, the daughter of Vesna Šunjić—a well-known Mostar fashion designer and founding director of the Zlatka Vuković Fashion Company—and Dr. Zdravko Šunjić. Fifteen days after her birth, she was brought to Mostar, where she spent her early childhood with her grandparents while her parents completed their studies. Marsela grew up between Mostar, Tripoli, and Detroit. In 1986, she earned a degree in economics from the University of "Džemal Bijedić" in Mostar. After relocating to New York as a refugee during the Bosnian War, she pursued further education at Sarah Lawrence College, where she specialized in creative writing. There, she discovered her true artistic calling. She is best known for her literary works  "Laku noć, grade"  ( Goodnight, City , 1995) and  "Puno pozdrava s Mjeseca" ( Many Greetings from the Moon , 2007). Translated into English, Italian, and Russian, these books offer poignant depictions of life in Mostar during its most difficult years. Critics praised her ability to transform everyday wartime experiences into powerful reflections on human suffering, resilience, and hope. Her writing was recognized for its emotional depth and anti-war themes, resonating with readers around the world. In addition to her literary achievements, Marsela also had a successful modeling career. Known for her elegance and personal charisma, she left a strong impression on those who knew her. Marsela Šunjić passed away on February 18, 2009, in Hanover, Germany. She was laid to rest at the City Cemetery in Mostar. Her books continue to serve as a lasting testament to her deep connection with Mostar, reflecting both the city's hardships and the enduring spirit of one of its devoted storytellers.
