Matija Čop was born in Žirovnica and died in Ljubljana. He was a Slovenian linguist, literary historian and literary critic. He was a friend of the poet France Prešeren (1800-1849). He drowned while swimming in the Sava River near the village of Tomačevo (today part of Ljubljana).
