Service Number ~ 39538 Unit ~ New Zealand Infantry, Maori Battalion Next of Kin ~ Mrs Moari Maraea Bailey (mother), Putiki, Wanganui, NZ Occupation on Enlistment ~ Labourer Embarkation ~  28 (Maori) Battalion, D Company, Second NZEF Son of Ihaka Bailey and of Moari Maraea Bailey (nee Graham), of Wanganui, Wellington, New Zealand. During the Crete campaign, the Germans dropped paratroopers in Maleme airfield.On the second day, 12 Planeloads landed along the Platanias river and D Company had the job of disposing of them. A number of Germans landed on the plateau and 19 Army Troops Company was forced to withdraw after losing some men. Two Maori Bren-Gunners, Privates John Whare and Matiu Bailey climbed out of their covered pits and went for the parachutists. Both died standing.
