In memoriam
Matteo was born in Mali Lošinj to Giovanni Nicolich and Domenica Budesa in 1878, according to his baptismal record. He was baptized Giovanni Giacomo Maria Nicolich, and likely attended the Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Crkva Rođenja B.D.Marije) in Mali Lošinj. Matteo married Giuseppina Simicich in 1907 in Mali Lošinj. We believe the couple had one child, Gianni. He was born in 1923 in Mali Lošinj and died in Genoa in 2016, according to an article in the LussinO newsletter. They may have had another son, Stelio (1926-1927), but those records are currently unavailable from Croatia's Archive. Matteo's occupation was listed as "faber navalis," which could mean he was a ship's carpenter/craftsman. He came to New York once in 1913; his brother-in-law Simon/Sam Simicich was his U.S.-based contact, and his wife was his contact back in Mali Lošinj. According to his death record in the Mali Lošinj church books, Matteo died in Mali Lošinj in 1932 and was buried at Sv. Martin Cemetery. His headstone also lists the names of his in-laws and wife. His wife Giuseppina died in Genoa, Italy, in 1956, according to her baptismal record. While she is named on Matteo's headstone, it may be a memorial for her rather than her final resting place. Sv. Martin is the church situated in this cemetery in Mali Lošinj. Should close family know more of Matteo, Giuseppina and Gianni, we'd love to know more. * Credit for headstone information: Grant Karcich, author, Kvarner Cemeteries: on the islands of Lošinj, Susak, Unije, and Ilovik (Printed at Asquith Press, Toronto, 2015). Baptismal, marriage and death information is listed in the parish books of Mali Lošinj available from Croatia's archives. Note: The headstone for Matteo Nicolich, and his wife Giuseppina, is listed under Matteo Niccoli.
