Bosniak National Hero and General of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina Mehmed Alagić was born on July 8, 1947, in Fajtovci, near Sanski Most, to parents Fermana Cerić and Redža Alagić. He began his military career as an active officer in the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA). In 1970, Alagić graduated from the military academy in Banja Luka and later became a teacher and leader at the Reserve Officers' School in Banja Luka. After completing advanced studies at the Command and Staff School, he served as the operational affairs officer in the 36th Mechanized Brigade in 1986. He was promoted to chief of staff of an infantry brigade in Zrenjanin in December 1989. Alagić retired from the JNA on February 27, 1991, with the rank of lieutenant colonel. Following his retirement, he became the commander of the 3rd Corps of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ARBiH) on November 1, 1993. Shortly after, he initiated the formation of the 7th Corps, which he commanded until 1994. Under his leadership, the 7th Corps became a highly effective and cohesive fighting force. Alagić's military leadership was instrumental in several critical operations, including the liberation of Mount Vlašić, Kupres, and Donji Vakuf. He was known for his resourceful strategy, integrating various brigades and units from the region into the 7th Corps, which earned it the title "Krajina Corps." The corps, although initially formed from diverse elements, soon became a symbol of resistance and hope for the people of the Krajina region. He also played a vital role in the defense of Travnik, an area strategically significant during the war. Alagić was committed to protecting Bosnian territories from the aspirations of neighboring leaders Franjo Tuđman and Slobodan Milošević, ensuring that their plans for territorial expansion were thwarted. Alagić's leadership was characterized by a deep sense of responsibility. He mobilized all available resources in the region, including civilian manpower, for the defense of Bosnia. Under his command, the 7th Corps achieved numerous victories and gained widespread recognition for its dedication and discipline. One of Alagić's most notable achievements was the liberation of the town of Sanski Most, alongside the 5th Corps, commanded by General Atif Dudaković, on October 9-10, 1995. After the war, Alagić retired from the military on his request and later became the first post-war mayor of Sanski Most. During his tenure, he worked tirelessly to provide refuge to displaced Bosniaks from other municipalities and contributed to the reconstruction and recovery of the town. General Alagić passed away on March 7, 2003, in Sanski Most. His funeral was attended by around 20,000 people from across Bosnia and Herzegovina, and he was buried in the Fajtovci cemetery. He is remembered not only as a dedicated warrior but also as a key figure in the post-war reconstruction of his hometown. His legacy as a national hero and his unwavering commitment to his people continue to inspire future generations.
