He was a Bosnian-Herzegovinian politician in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (now the Kingdom of Yugoslavia) and president of the Yugoslav Muslim Organization (JMO) in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. He was the Minister of Forestry and Mining in the Government of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS) and Minister of Trade and Industry in the Government of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS) and one of the most important Bosnian politicians of the 20th century. He was the first Bosniak (Bosnian Ethnic Muslim) in the government of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SHS). He advocated for the territorial preservation of the borders of Bosnia and Herzegovina and was the leader of the Bosniak political party Yugoslav Muslim Organization (JMO) until his death. A street in Sarajevo and many other public institutions in Bosnia and Herzegovina are named after Mehmed Spaho.
