In memoriam

Opera Singer. A bass-baritone, he shall be remembered for his long career with the Croatian National Theatre, during which he was particularly noted for comedic portrayals. Raised in the eastern portion of what was then-Yugoslavia, he took to music early, was trained at the Music Academy of Zagreb where he took part in the May Festival as well as numerous student productions, and launched his professional career on radio and television as well as at the Comic Theatre of Zagreb. While there, he refined his craft in numerous operas and operettas, among them Otto Nicolai's "The Merry Wives of Windsor", Rossini's "Le Comte Ory", Cimarosa's "The Secret Marriage", and Jacques Offenbach's "La Belle Helene". In 1969 Mr. Vajda joined the company of the Zagreb Opera where he starred in works well-known and otherwise, his assignments including the Sacristan of Puccini's "Tosca", probably his signature, Fra Melitone from Verdi's "La Forza del Destino", Tomskogo in Tchaikovsky's "The Queen of Spades", the title lead of "Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro", Krusina in Bedric Smetana's "The Bartered Bride", the Consul from Puccini's "Madame Butterfly", and Dr. Bartolo of Rossini's "The Barber of Saville". He traveled with his ensemble to Salzburg, Moscow, Tokyo, Vienna, Geneva, Athens, and elsewhere, and retired in 1991, though he made a 2001 final appearance as Fra Melitone on the occasion of his receipt of the Golden Bell from the Croatian Society of Music. Mr. Vajda lived out his days in Zagreb; at his demise, his art was preserved on a number of recordings.
