In memoriam

Charles Cook was born 9th July 1896, and baptised 23rd October 1896 at Harleston. Son of Adolphus and Eliza Cook, of Sale Yard, Harleston, Norfolk. On the 1911 census Adolphus is a bricklayer, and employer, and Charles work as a butcher in Harleston. One of ten children, Charles is the youngest, two of his sisters, Mabel and Lily, still live at home and are hosiery workers. A 1908 Kelly's Directory lists Adolphus as a Bricklayer, Bullock Fair Yard, which is the family's address. He died in 1912, aged 55. He enlisted at Norwich. 21163 Lance Corporal, 9th Battalion Border Regiment. He died 9th October 1918 in Salonika, age 22. Today Salonika is known as Thessaloniki, situated in northern Greece, not far from the border with Bulgaria and Macedonia. Charles is commemorated on the Harleston War Memorial.
