Australian Infantry

Australian Infantry VX44196 Charles enlisted on 15 July 1940, in Warragul. He was previously a civil engineer and had not yet married. He initially embarked for Palestine on 3 Nov 1940, and further embarked for Greece on 23 Mar 1941 from Alexandria. He was reported missing on 4 June 1941, and was further reported to be a POW on 6 June. Charles was last seen in June 1941 on board a barge off Argos in the Bay of Nafplio. A fellow soldier believed he survived the sinking of the barge there. Between 1942 and 1944, the Red Cross did a search of all camps and was unable to locate him, or find news of his whereabouts. Charles was never recovered and his status was presumed dead, with his final resting place "known unto God". He has a memorial with his family: Cenotaph with family . and The Australian War Memorial.
