Dimitris Rontiris (1899-20 December 1981) was a Greek theater director. Born in 1899 in Piraeus. First entered the Military Academy, which, after two years of schooling, abandoned for the sake of legal studies at the University of Athens. Theatrical career began in 1919 as an actor. Then he went to Austria, where she studied theater, art history and ancient Greek literature. He then went to Berlin despite the great director Max Reinhardt. He returned to Greece and appointed in 1933 director of the Royal Theatre and the 'Theatre Conservatory, "where he appeared first as a director, with the musical drama Kalomoiris" Mother's Ring ". Later he served as director of the National Theatre, which took over management in times 1946-1950 and 1953-1955. In 1950 he founded the 'Greek Theatre' and 1957 'experiments Theatre ", the head of which he toured in many countries of Europe, North and South America and Asia, where he presented theatrical performances of ancient tragedy. He directed many works of world classic and newer repertoire, including 11 works of Shakespeare and many ancient tragedies. The direction of Electra and Hamlet, which the troupe of the Royal Theatre staged in 1939 in England and Germany, caused the most enthusiastic reviews of specific space. Especially the performance of Aeschylus' Oresteia trilogy at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus in 1949, in the presence of state and political authority in the country, was considered as an exceptional artistic achievement. He died on 20 December 1981.
