Emil Jäger

In memoriam

As a professional soldier he attained the rank of Oberst and had joined the NDSAP in Austria in 1933. He was appointed as the Territorial Commander of the Island of Corfu in April 1944 and had attempted unsuccessfully to prevent the deportation of the island's Jewish population to Auschwitz. The Wehrmacht withdrew from the island in October 1944 and Oberst Jäger was still commanding the fortress battalion 1017 in the Balkans in February 1945. It is unclear when he was taken prisoner but on March 26, 1946 he was tried in Tirana and sentenced to death, being executed mid-1947.
