Service Number: 8/857 Unit: NZEF, Otago Regiment Next of Kin: Mrs Catherine Kneller (mother), Edendale, Southland, NZ Ernest Attested 24th August 1914 at Milton, South Island, NZ, he was 5' 4½" in height with brown eyes and dark hair, giving his trade as a cheesemaker. Embarking 16th October 1914 from Port Chalmers, NZ, and disembarking 3rd December 1914 at Alexandria, Greece. Ernest died of sickness (Cardiac Failure) at 15th Australian Stationary Hospital on the island of Lemnos, Greece. Son of Catherine McFarlane (formerly Wright), of 124, Rose St., Spreydon, Christchurch, New Zealand, and the late James Wright. Born at Little River, Banks Peninsula, New Zealand.
