Evgen Kansky

In memoriam

Born in Warsaw; studied chemistry in Berlin and medicine in Moscow. He served as a military doctor on the front line for a year during the First World War. He moved to Prague in 1919 at, at the recommendation of President Tomáš Masaryk, relocated to Ljubljana, where he taught chemistry and physiology at the newly founded medical school. He and his wife founded a chemical company in Podgrad pri Ljubljani. The Podgrad factory was confiscated by the wartime German authorities in 1941 and the company's Ljubljana office languished until the end of the war. In 1945 the new communist authorities took over the Podgrad premises and also assumed control of the Ljubljana office. Because of his opposition to communism, Evgen Kansky was removed from his teaching position at the medical school and forced into retirement.
