In memoriam

He was born in Cardiff, Wales, in 1879, and was baptised at Cardiff's All Saints Church in 1879. He was the son of Abraham Norman (1837-1916) and Elizabeth Norman nee Richards (1838-1914), who were both native of Milverton, Somerset, and had married at St Michael's Church, Milverton on the 23rd of September 1869. Around 1875 his parents had moved to reside at 29 Maria Street, Butetown, Cardiff, where Frederick's father had gained a position as a Dock Gateman at the nearby Cardiff Docks. Frederick's siblings were: ​1. Henry Norman (1878-1933) - He became a Bricklayer and on the 24th of February 1897 married Clara Annie Smith (1875-1972). They resided at Milverton and raised a family of three children. 2. Charles Norman (1880-1950) - He became a Carpenter. He lived with his parents at until their deaths. He married Mary Emma Stephens (1881-1962), with whom he had a son. During WW1 Charles served as Private 309049 in the Tank Corps and as Sapper 185470 in the Royal Engineers. By 1891 the family had relocated back to Milverton, residing in Fore Street, and with Frederick's Father being listed as a 'Naval Pensioner'. In both the 1901 and 1911 census records Frederick was shown as being employed as a Grocer's Assistant in Milverton for James Slade Allen (b.1859). Fred also attended Milverton's St Michael's Church and was one of the Bellringers there. When war came in 1914 Fred enlisted at Taunton into Royal Army Service Corps as a Diver with the 163rd Horse Transport Company (Service No. T4/186776). They were converted into the 18th Auxiliary Horse Transport Company and sent to Salonika, Greece, to support the Macedonian Front. Throughout the Salonika campaign the British forces lost 162,000 personnel as victims of Malaria. Fred died from Malaria on the 5th of November 1918. He was aged 39 and was buried at Stavros Cemetery, Plot 4. A. 8. However, in 1921, under the concentration of War Graves Scheme, his body was exhumed and reburied at the Mikra British Cemetery in Kalamaria, Greece.
