Romanian Olympic Gold Medalist. One of the greatest females in the high jumping competition, she amassed a streak of 140 event wins and held several world records including being the first women to exceed a six-foot jump in 1958. Her Olympic experience began with a fifth-place finish during the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne. In 1960, she captured the gold medal in the Women's High Jump competition during the Summer Games in Rome and repeated her performance with a gold medal at the 1964 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo. She retired from competition in 1966 due to a toll of injuries and worked as a physical education instructor. She is a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations Hall of Fame. She died of complications from gastric ailments.
