24862 Private James Branscombe, was Killed in Action on the 2nd January 1917 while serving with the 7th.Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment. The 7th.Btn. official War Diary entry for 2-1-1917 reported 'Enemy shelled D8 and old Battn HQ with several HE (4.2) during morning and also D10 in the afternoon with 5.9 obtaining one direct hit. Casualties during the day 1 killed ("probably James"), 7 wounded. Our artillery retaliated where upon enemy ceased fire. Quiet night. Remarks. 7 OR to hospital wounded. Husband of Rose Edith Branscombe (b.29-3-1896) and father to James Alfred John (b.3-5-1910, Dorothy Ethel Mary (b.16-7-1911), and Ivy Violet Olive (b.9-10-1912. The family lived at 2, Laburnham Cottage, Old Windsor, Berkshire.
