NX5849 Posting on Death: 2/4th AUSTRALIAN INFANTRY BATTALION He was killed in action in Greece. Description Informal portrait of two soldiers, both of the 2/4 Battalion. The name of the soldier on the left is unknown, but on the right is NX5849 Private (Pte) James John Ryan of Bondi, NSW, and Young, NSW, who enlisted on 24 October 1939 and served in the 2/4 Battalion. Pte Ryan was killed in action at Florina, Greece, on 4 April 1941, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Athens Memorial. Born Young, New South Wales. The Sydney Morning Herald - Tuesday, 27 May 1941 "ROLL OF HONOUR RYAN - April 13 1941 abroad. Killed in action. Private James John beloved son of the late Denis Ryan of Bendick Murrell, NSW and Margaret of 106 Boscoe Street, Bondi Beach, loved brother of Nell (Mrs Grounds), Monica (Mrs Cook), Len, Peggy nd Nancy, aged 23." He is commemorated on the Roll of Honour in BENDICK MURRELL, also his name is located at panel 30 in the Commemorative Area at the Australian War Memorial. Son of Denis and Margaret Jane Ryan, of Bondi Beach, New South Wales, Australia. Father Denis (Denny) Ryan (1885-1926) Mother Margaret Jane (Maggie) McInerney (1887-1960)
