Joseph Dreissiger

In memoriam

The Dreissiger family --- Joseph, his wife Stephanie, and their three children, Boris, Ljerka, and Željko --- were all murdered in the Holocaust, though the exact circumstances of their deaths remain a mystery. The family lived in Zagreb, Croatia, and were active members of the Jewish community. All three Dreissiger children were on a list of children planning to immigrate to Israel from Zagreb (via Turkey) in the autumn of 1942. For whatever reason, this trip never happened --- likely, it was blocked by Nazi leadership. Joseph is known to have been arrested and imprisoned in the Jasenovac camp, where he is recorded as perishing in 1941. The fates of his family are murky; according to deportation records, Stephanie and the children were sent away in early 1943 to an unspecified camp "in Germany". (The final deportation of Croatian Jews occurred in May 1943, so we can conclude they were sent away by that time; they were most likely sent to Auschwitz, though we cannot say for certain.)
