Flight Lieutenant R. A. Towgood (of Canada) Pilot Royal Air Force 5th February 1941 Age 26 (Cross) Duty well performed

Rank: Flight Lieutenant Service Number: 39603 Service: Royal Air Force, 84 Squadron Died: 5th February 1941 Age: 26 years old. Robert Addison 'Bob' Towgood was the son of Mr and Mrs A. S. Towgood of Oyama, British Columbia, Canada. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1936, and The Vernon News, on the 4th April 1940 gives the following report: "Flying Officer Frank Powley, of Oyama, is in Kohat in India, near the Khyber Pass. He is acting as an adjutant in the R.A.F. station at Kohat. He went overseas in 1936 with Flying Officer R. A. Towgood, of Oyama, and the late Flying Officer Richard Coe... who was killed in an accident in January. Towgood is stationed in Iraq. He has been with the air force for four years, the last two of which have been spent in the Near East. For the past six months he has been training pilots in desert patrol flying. Towgood advanced to Flight Lieutenant, and served as a pilot with 84 Squadron (Blenheims) in 1941. The Squadron served in Greece, carrying out operations against the Italians in Albania. Towgood was killed in action during an operational sortie, 5th February 1941, and is buried in Phaleron War Cemetery, Athens, Greece. information provided by Woose 48275987
