In memoriam

Private Robert Stockport, aged 27, of the King's Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, was killed on the Eastern front on July 1st, 1918. son of John Edward Stockport and Martha Ann Daniels, Two brothers also died, Albert 18th September 1918 and John Edward 3rd January 1918 .This soldier, who lived at 17 Bradshaw-street, Middleton Junction, was employed as a spinner at the Laurel Mill, and enlisted in November, 1915, going to France in 1916. He was wounded there, and on recovering was sent to Salonica. When at home he was connected with the Gilmour-street Lyceum, and played football for Middleton Junction (Haslam) Football Club. Sergeant Kelly wrote to the parents: "We shall miss him very often, as he was a very cheerful man and always kept us alive with his funny jokes, as he was doing a few hours before he met his death. I am pleased to say we had the padre there before he died, and also when we were lowering our lost comrade into his last resting-place. It was hard for us to bear, but it must have been God's will that we had to leave him behind. He was a very good soldier and willing to do anything I asked him. We all send you our deepest sympathy in your sad bereavement, and hope you will soon recover from the shock you have received."
