Robert Thomas “Bob” Gilmore

1915 – 1941

In memoriam

Robert Thomas Gilmore was a Department Store Manager (McKenzies) at Tauranga in the Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. All three Gilmore brothers fought during World War II. Bob the eldest (21501, 21st Battalion); Les (62975, 21st Battalion); and the youngest brother Bill (7309, 27th Machine Gun Battalion). Bob died at Larissa near Mount Olympus in Greece. His platoon was defending a railway station. An eye witness account claims he was killed by a German tank. This eye witness was wounded by the same tank and taken POW. It is assumed that the Germans buried Bob although his grave has never been found. The river running beside the town has since changed direction and all traces of the area are now under water. It was only by chance that Bob's brother Bill found out this information at an RSA social as Bob had previously been posted as 'Missing - Believed Killed' and nothing was known of his fate.Cenotaph: https://www.aucklandmuseum.com/war-memorial/online-cenotaph/record/C20039. Service No. WWII 21501. Robert is also remembered on the Tauranga War Memorial. Geni Profile: https://www.geni.com/people/Robert-Gilmore/6000000174656721051
