Son of John Wright (Abt 1840 - 1895) and his wife Jane Murphy (Abt 1841 - 1917) of Colvend, Kirkcudbrightshire. He is mentioned on the family gravestone at Colvend Kirkyard, Kirkcudbrightshire. Also Robert (Pte Black Watch) their son who died at Salonika, 18th August 1916, aged 37 years. He married Mary Elizabeth Bigham in 1904. They had one daughter, Jane Halliday, in 1905.
