Salih Behmen

In memoriam

-Muslim activist from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Salih Behmen was born on February 12, 1922 in Mostar, where he finished elementary school and high school. During the 1930s, he joined the Mladi Muslimani organization and actively participated in building the movement in Mostar and Herzegovina. He was later arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison, of which he served eight and a half years. After his release from prison, he graduated in mathematics and physics and spent most of his working life as a teacher of those subjects. He participated in the Sarajevo trial (Sarajevo process) in 1983 and was sentenced to 5 years in prison, serving three and a half years. He later worked as a storekeeper in a hospital and as a railroad clerk before returning to his profession. He died in Sarajevo on October 27, 1990, and was buried in his native Mostar.
