Walter Reginald Basil Long

77543 Lieutenant Walter Reginald Basil Long was the son of Richard Eric Onslow Long, 3rd Viscount Long T.D., J.P.and Gwendolyn Hague Cook of Steeple Ashton, 2 H.A.A. Regt,Royal Artillery Lockers Park - Harrow - Royal Horse Artillery. Evacuated from Greece around 26 April. 3 ships involved - Dutch liner Slamat, HMSs Diamond and Wryneck. Due to threat of air attack, all three were ordered to leave. Diamond and Wryneck did so but Slamat refused due to still taking on troops. Air attack came in and Diamond and Wryneck had to return to help. All three ships sunk. Out of 983 men on all three ships, only 66 survived. It is unclear which ship Walter was on.
