William was one of 16 children to George Ellis Crew, a collier, and Priscilla Crew (formerly Hill). William was born in Bedminster Down and was living at 67 Elmdale Road, Bedminster Bristol in the 1911 census. William and two of his brothers enlisted in WW1, but only one returned home.
