In memoriam
Son of Pericles. He was presumably named after his grandfather. He and his younger brother Paralus were apparently of inferior capacity and poorer character compared to their father; indeed, they both came to be called "cabbage-suckers." Paralus and Xanthippus both died in the Plague of Athens in 429 BC. Pericles, beset by grief, succumbed to the Plague himself soon afterwards.
