In memoriam

Ballerina born in Yugoslavia. Studied at the School of the National ballet of Zagreb and took further lessons in Vienna. She then went to Paris and studed under the noted teachers Egorova, Kchessinska and Preobrajenska. Made her debut as a child prodigy in 1922 and became known for her virtuoso technique. She joined Zagreb Ballet in 1930 as a soloist and in 1934 became their prima ballerina until 1935. She then went to dance in London and Paris. Became a principal with Denham's Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. 1952 saw her create the role of Blanche Dubois in Valerie Bettis' A Streetcar Named Desire with her own company founded in the same year. She guested with many other companies and guest directed Louisville Ballet and Fort Worth Civic Ballet. Taught at her own studio in Hollywood and several other institutions. Starred in the 1938 movie La Mort Cygne.
