Midhad “Hujka” Hujdur

1953 – 1993

In memoriam

Bosnian Military Commander Midhad Hujdur, also known by the nickname "Hujka," was a Bosniak military commander during the Bosnian War and a posthumous recipient of the Golden Lily and the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War. He played a key leadership role in the defense and military organization of Mostar in the early 1990s. Born on December 28, 1953, in Mostar, then part of the Socialist Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina in the former Yugoslavia, he began his professional life working for the Bosnian construction company "Hidrogradnja," both in the country and abroad. On December 19, 1991, he enlisted as a reserve police officer at the Luka Police Station in Mostar. As the conflict escalated, he became a prominent figure in organizing local defense and resistance efforts. In April 1992, with the formation of the Army of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina, he assumed command of a battalion within the First Mostar Brigade. The brigade was initially under the leadership of Arif Pašalić. Upon Pašalić's appointment as commander of the 4th Corps, Hujdur took command of the brigade, which would later become known as the 41st Glorious Brigade. He was widely recognized for his courage, leadership, and strategic capabilities. In 1993, Mostar came under heavy attack by the Croatian Defence Council (HVO), resulting in widespread destruction and civilian suffering. During these offensives, Hujdur played a critical role in defending the eastern part of the city and maintaining resistance under siege conditions. On June 30, 1993, Hujdur was killed during a military operation aimed at breaking the siege of Mostar. He was buried at the Martyrs Cemetery in Mostar. In recognition of his service and sacrifice, he was posthumously awarded the rank of brigadier general. His contributions were further honored with the Order of the Golden Lily in 1992 and the Order of the Hero of the Liberation War in 1994. Hujdur is remembered as a committed and fearless commander who was instrumental in the organization and defense of Mostar during one of its most difficult periods. His actions and leadership left a lasting legacy within the Bosnian armed forces and among the citizens of Mostar.
