Natalia Dragoumi Mela

In memoriam

(Greek: Ναταλία Μελά-Δραγούμη) Daughter of Stefanos Dragoumis (Greek: Στέφανος Δραγούμης; 1842 – 17 September 17 1923), who was a judge, writer and the Prime Minister of Greece from January to October 1910. She married Pavlos Melas in 1892, and the couple had a son and a daughter. Her husband was a junior artillery officer, who, with tacit government "encouragement", took leave from the Greek Army to fight for the unification of Macedonia with Greece. His contribution was minimal and he died as a result of a skirmish with Ottoman forces. Thanks partly to his widow's efforts, and both Melas & Dragoumis family connections, he was lionized as a national hero and is still celebrated for his role in The Macedonian Struggle. She was initially buried in the Dragoumis family tomb, and reintered later beside her husband at Kastoria.
