Voivoda of Moldova and Transylvania. Known as Basarab V and revered as a saint by the Romanian Orthodox Church, he belonged to the aristocratic Craiovesti dynasty. The period during which he reigned (1512-1521) over Wallachia was an interval in the centuries-old struggle for power between the Draculesti and the Danesti. Its political activity was mainly directed towards maintaining the status quo and national prosperity. He was also the promulgator of a close collaboration and rapprochement between the Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, patron of the arts and culture in general, and finally also an insightful diplomat.
